Anti-Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) – Key Features
- Concentration & Strength
- Contains 200 IU in 5 ml (40 IU/ml).
- Human or equine-derived immunoglobulin.
- Passive Immunity
- Provides immediate, short-term protection by neutralizing the rabies virus at the site of entry.
- Essential Part of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
- Administered in conjunction with rabies vaccine for Category III exposures (as per WHO).
- Wound Infiltration Priority
- Infiltrated directly into and around the wound for maximum local virus neutralization.
- Remaining Dose Given Intramuscularly
- If excess volume remains after wound infiltration, it’s administered IM at a site distant from vaccine.
- Used Only Once per Exposure
- Not repeated; single-use per rabies exposure incident.
- Available as Human or Equine RIG
- HRIG (Human): Lower risk of allergic reaction, longer half-life.
- ERIG (Equine): More affordable, requires test dose due to higher risk of hypersensitivity.
